The Information Architecture Process
Great IA is about research, planning and execution. For my IA ‘planning’ phase, the process begins with keyword, market and competitor research.
But beyond this research, there are 4 steps to my IA process.
1. What are your brand goals?
I will ask you two questions: Why do you want to do IA? What do you want to achieve with IA? Usually, your brand goals will fall into 3 categories: You want to make more money, reduce costs or help people make better decisions. It is critical to be clear on your IA brand goal.
2. What are your user (target audience) goals?
Interviews, personas and scenarios may need to be created to answer two questions: What are your users going to do on your website? What are you users goals? Constraints such as ‘technology’ need to be considered during this step.
3. Analyse your competitors
It’s critical (as a brand) that you know all your competition. Looking at your competitors in your market, we need to consider: Is there IA good and what makes it good or bad? Is there website easy to navigate? Where is information displayed on their website? Which information is common across their website?
4. Define content
If your brand already has a website with content, then a ‘content audit’ will be needed to determine what content stays, and what goes. If you are a new brand, and your website has no content, then we will start from scratch.
