The Information Architecture Process

Great IA is about:

  • Research
  • Planning, and ultimately
  • Execution.

For my IA “research” and “planning” phase the process is kicked off by:

  • Keyword research 360°
  • Market research 360°, and
  • Competitor research 360°.

But beyond Keyword research, market research and competitor research there are 4 steps to my IA process…

What are your business goals?

I will ask you two questions:

  • Why do you want to do IA?
  • What do you want to achieve with IA?

Usually your business goals will fall into 3 categories:

  • You want to make more money
  • You want to reduce costs
  • You want to (or help people) make better decisions.

It is critical to be clear on your IA business goal.

What are your user (target audience) goals?

Interviews, personas and scenarios may need to be created to answer 2 questions:
  • What are your users going to do on your website?
  • What are your user’s goals?
Constraints such as “technology” need to be considered during this step.

Analyse your competitors

It is critical as a business owner that you know all your competition! Looking at your competitors in your market we need to consider:

  • Is there IA good and what makes it good or bad?
  • Is there website easy to navigate?
  • Where is information displayed on their website?
  • Which information is common across their website?

Define content

If your business already has a website with content, then a “content audit” will be needed to determine what content stays and what goes.

If you are a new business and your website has no content, then we will start from scratch.
